Special UK Regulatory Provisions
Customer Invoice Pricing Rule
Businesses on the Flat Rate Scheme must invoice their customers exactly like any normal VAT-registered business, charging 20% VAT. The flat rate percentage is strictly an internal calculation for HMRC returns.
Limited Cost Business Rule
Businesses spending less than 2% of turnover or £1,000 per year on relevant goods must pay 16.5% flat rate to HMRC on their return (TODO_VERIFY sector-specific flat rates).
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I put my flat rate percentage on the customer invoice?
No! Customer invoices must show the standard 20% VAT rate (or applicable 5% rate). You must NEVER show your internal flat rate percentage to the customer.
How does the Flat Rate Scheme work internally?
You charge your customer normal 20% VAT, but on your quarterly VAT return to HMRC, you pay a flat percentage of your total gross turnover based on your trade sector.
