Frequently Asked Questions

When am I legally required to issue a full VAT invoice?

Under HMRC rules, you must issue a full VAT invoice within 30 days of the time of supply if both you and your customer are VAT registered and you are supplying standard or reduced-rate goods or services.

Can I issue a simplified VAT invoice instead?

HMRC permits simplified VAT invoices only for retail supplies under £250 (including VAT). For B2B sales or transactions over £250, a full VAT invoice showing both parties' details, individual line rates, and total VAT in Sterling is legally required.

What if I invoice my customer in Euros or US Dollars?

You may bill in foreign currencies, but HMRC requires the total VAT amount to be explicitly stated in Sterling (GBP) on the invoice, using HMRC's official exchange rate or the UK market exchange rate.

Do I have to display a customer VAT number?

Displaying the customer's VAT registration number is best practice and required when supplying goods/services subject to reverse charge mechanisms.
